New Morning The Paris Concert

This electrifying concert was recorded in May 2001 in the “New Morning” club in Paris, one of the most important European jazz clubs. The packed house experienced Robben Ford in peak form. It was a truly classy performance on the stage that night. Acco

5 Stars Smokin’
Robben Ford is in fine form on this set from about 5 years back. Great rhythm section lays it down expertly so Robben can do his thing. Also a nice interview on the DVD. Favorite track: Nothin’ to Nobody.

4 Stars Impressive Guitar Work
I am an amateur guitarist for several years now with a special liking towards rock-blues, jazz- blues guitarists. Robben Ford fits my taste. He can easily impress anyone with similar tastes. His guitar work is superb!

5 Stars One of the all-time tastiest blues guitarists.
I’ve been a Robben Ford fan since he released “The Inside Story” LP back in the early 80’s. About a year ago I was browsing amazon’s music DVD’s and I found and ordered this DVD. I play it the moment it arrives and I’m am elated to finally see this brilliant guitarist perform. I agree with all the other reviews that this is a finely produced DVD with good camera work, great audio, and a fine back up band. I would describe Robben’s playing style as jazz-tinged blues. He’s not a Stevie Ray or Johnny Winter style player and shouldn’t be compared to those guys. His phrasing is flawless and every note counts. He never overplays or resorts to any flashy “over-the-top” riffing. After watching this great DVD I decide that I have to see Robben perform live. And now my story/review takes a sharp turn into the “Twilight Zone”. I’m sure you’ve heard the adage “Be careful what you wish for”. The next day I get an email from a friend I haven’t heard from in months and he writes that he’s got a block of tickets to see John Mayall in concert this week and would I like to go. I say yes and meet him at the concert venue a few days later. He hands me the ticket and I go to the usher who has to walk me into the darkened theater with a flashlight because the show has already started. I’m following him and to my surprise he walks me to the first row, center seat. The first act was Eric Bibb, who is a fine acoustic blues guitarist and who I’m seeing for the first time. I’m digging the music and my front row seat when they announce the second act. “Ladies and gentlemen, Robben Ford”. I almost fell out of my seat. Out comes my guitar hero just a couple of yards away and proceeds to blow the doors down. After a few tunes by himself, Robben is joined by Mayall’s back up band. Out walks another guitarist who turns out to be another killer player whose name is Buddy Whittington . To make a long story short, I thought I died and went to guitar heaven. After the show I got to meet both Mayall and Buddy. Unfortunately, I didn’t see Robben. It was a mind blowing experience that happening within a week’s time of ordering this DVD. Order your copy today because you never know what might happen.

3 Stars Style, chops and thin voice
Robben Ford is a wonderfully fluid and stylish player. He is also very likable. This DVD showcases that admirably. It also showcases his one weakness which is his thin nasal vocals. This is one reason I pray every day that Larry Carlton never sings. Try as he will Ford just can’t pull off the blues vocal believably which is not to cut short his melding of a blues/jazz riff based idiom.

1 Star defective disks
I would LOVE to hear this concert. Unfortunately, the disk was defective. I sent it back and got a 2nd one, which was also defective, so I gave up. Hope I get to hear it someday!
