I’ve been looking for some evil sounding instrumentals, especially in the area of classical music and movie soundtracks. Do you guys know any>
I really enjoy Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring” If you have ever watched Fantasia, that’s the dinosaur one. Another good one for sort of sinister sounding is Holst’s “Mars” from the Planets. Not necessarily evil, but creeping and powerful. Hector Berlioz “Symphonie Fantastique” and the Dies Irae is pretty awesome in the 5th movement. It’s depicting a witches dance, so I’m not sure how you could get much more evil than that.
Movies use contemporary classical music, and its harmonic and orchestral vocabulary most often in the context of darker emotions such as eerie, suspense, evil, etc. They use this because it is utterly unfamiliar to the average movie-goer.
Ergo: you may associate with “evil” any music with a shape or sound that is from a Contemporary or modern composer – depending upon what the extent of your familiarity with classical music is.
Alban Berg’s Violin Concerto is considered a modern lyric masterpiece, still very much in the romantic tradition. It uses the ‘12-tone’ serial manner of composition, and to you, it might sound evil. I repeat this is a lyric masterpiece dedicated “to the memory of an Angel.”
Context, familiarity / lack of familiarity is everything insofar as your perceptions about music go.
Best, Petr B.
Whilst I am sure I know what you mean and are looking for, music cannot sound “evil.” It can communicate human emotions, but not moral standards or ethical criteria. It can portray love, hate, sadness and joy – but not good or bad let alone evil.
Along the lines of music that you may consider “evil sounding” try Scriabin’s “Black Mass” Piano sonata No.6 Op.62 or Ravel “Scarbo” from Gaspard de la Nuit.
My favorite evil sounding music haven’t posted it for awhile
Berio: Sinfonia (this is part of the 1st movement) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjaXikDp5…
My second favorite evil piece
Prokofiev -Scythian Suite (again only a taste) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8Y1lLfVz…
If you want big loud orchestra and singers evil, you could try Carmina Burana (by Carl Orff) or parts of the Lord of the Rings soundtrack (by Howard Shore).
If you’re looking for something more subtle and wicked sounding you mights try the Violin Concerto by Sibelius.
Liszt’s Totentanz is up there… Quite gut wrenching…http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqCEhmqsS…
Much of Prokofiev, Stravinsky, and Shostakovitch can be viewed as evil… But to others, it is glorious…
This Legetti etude, “Devils Staircase” Is about as evil as it gets…http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZTaiDHqs…
I’ll think, and come back with more…
Nox Arcana is amazing
As well as Midnight Syndicate.
They are by far the coolest instrumental gothic horror bands around.
Also Un Fatisma Tra Noi (a ghost between us) by Lacuna Coil.
Also really good ;]
Rachmaninoff – Op. 3 No. 2 In C Sharp Minorhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EtuMVBLEW…
The Halloween theme song is as evil as it gets.
For an intermediate level piano piece, I would suggest #6 of “Buds and Blossoms,” op. 107 by Cornelius Gurlitt.
Frankly I’m not too sure…But if you want creepy music then Bartok’s Violin Sonata “Melodie” is the way to go.
Try Machu Picchu by Satoshi Yagisawa
its pretty freaky
Nox Arcana or Midnight Syndicate (I prefer MS)are great as the other dude mentioned. Look em up on Youtube.
